ABSTRACT
A field experiment to evaluate leaching under intensive irrigation was conducted over an 11-day period on a Plainfield loamy sand fertilized with KNO3 and KCl. The NO3-N and Cl concentration in soil profile and lysimeter leachate samples collected daily were determined. Under the conditions of this experiment 2.5 cm of water moved about 19 cm in the surface and 28 cm in the subsurface soil. Chloride concentrations in the profiles were similar to those of NO3-N. Movement of NO3-N and Cl was 15 to 20 cm/day under 2.5 cm daily water application. The results show that rainfall and/or irrigation, can rapidly move NO3-N beyond the rooting zone of this soil.
Key Words: ground water pollution leaching miscible displacement nitrogen fertilizers
